Parish Council Election
There are ten candidates for Birlingham Parish Council. You can vote for up to seven of these candidates.

We asked the ten parish council candidates to tell us (in 100 words) what previous council experience they had,
what other village organisations they are involved in, and what particular expertise they can bring to the Council.

Here are their responses.

Stuart Allen
1 King William IV Close

Over the last three years I have had the opportunity of being involved in many of the Birlingham community occasions. I enjoy being an active bell ringer and tower secretary at St James' and have recently been asked to support the village hall committee.

I am passionate about maintaining the uniqueness of village life which Birlingham provides and being a strategic voice for our community. Although I don't have actual Parish Council experience I can transfer the skills and knowledge from my role as Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response Manager for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

I am always happy to discuss and deliver your concerns and ambition for our community.

Ken Fitch
3 King William IV Close

I do not have any previous parish council experience, which means I hope to give a fresh approach to the decision making process, challenging preconceived ideas.

I am currently involved with the village hall holding the position of vice chairman. I am also active on the sub committee involved in getting the village hall broadband accessible to users of the hall and village residents who are less familiar with the Internet.

Whilst residing in Leicestershire I gained extensive experience of working with committees through the position of school governor and chairman of a community centre. Hopefully I will be able to bring the skills gained in these positions to the Parish Council.

Paula Aston
Court Barn, Upper End

I have been a member of the Parish Council for the past 6 years as well as the Planning Group.

I regularly get involved in village events including in the past, annual village fetes, sports days and the Jubilee celebrations and even married at the church.

Upper End has always been sparsely represented on the Parish Council so I feel I can give a balance to any issues that occur in the village as a whole. I am happy to raise and challenge any issues and have the best interests of the village and its residents at heart.

John Hill
Sycamore House, Church Street

I have served on the Parish Council for the whole of the last term of four years.

I am Honorary Treasurer and Member of the Parochial Church Council; member of the Jubilee Committee and also member of Birlingham Website Group.

I bring a knowledge and understanding of financial matters gained in both business and the professional world. Having lived in the village for 30 years I enjoy the environment and care about the village developing in an appropriate manner to meet future needs.

Alan Bradley
Bell Barn, Lower End

I have been a member of the Birlingham Village Hall Committee for 2 years.

My current position requires strategic planning, innovation and value creation. Some of these skills but not necessary all may be of significant use in matters arising on the Parish Council.

Integrity must be evident, and in that regard I turn to my time working for HRH the Prince of Wales for 8 years.

Steve Morris
Hall Farm, Whitehall Lane (office)

I moved to Birlingham 15 years ago and have been a member of the Parish Council for the last eight (currently as Chairman).

I am a member of Birlingham Website Group and the Jubilee Committee, and have been involved in organising the Jubilee celebrations and two village fetes. I am also a member of the bell-ringing and darts teams.

Birlingham is a small yet vibrant community and has escaped the over-development that has spoilt so many Worcestershire villages. I would like to continue using my previous experience on other councils to ensure that the village evolves in a beneficial way.

John Comins
The Old Rectory

During my 44 years at the Old Rectory I have been active in preserving Birlingham as a country village free from urban development.

I have served on the Village Hall committee, and was on the PCC for 43 years, 12 years as the Chairman, was Churchwarden for 18 years and am still responsible for the churchyard.

Since retirement I have become particularly interested in planning matters both regionally and locally and regularly comment on development applications on behalf of the Parish Council and the Gardens Trust. I would like to continue to use my experience in this field for the benefit of Birlingham.

Marion New
2 Church Street

My husband Steve and I moved into Birlingham nearly 15 years ago from Kemerton on the other side of Bredon Hill.

I joined the Village Show Committee 12 years ago and have been chairman for the last five.

I was co-opted onto the Parish Council nearly three years ago and feel strongly that villages as beautiful as ours should have a voice, as there is a strong 'family' quality to our village which I want to protect and nurture. I wish to continue supporting all aspects of village life and the families therein for the foreseeable future.

Steve Conder
Partridge Cottage, Lower End

I have spent approximately one year on Birlingham Parish Council, including the parish Planning Group.

I am not a member of any specific Birlingham organisations, allowing total and true independence on all Parish Council decisions. You might see me running around the village, enjoying the footpaths and Birlingham's natural beauty.

I am the Project Manager for large scale Government projects, so I am used to making recommendations and important decisions, taking account of a wide range of perspectives and implications. I'm therefore used to dealing with Civil Servants and Government bureaucracy, and can utilise my specialised skills for the benefit of the village.

Ian Yates
Lower Farm, Defford Road

My wife, Wendy was born in Birlingham and we were married at St James's Church in 1982. We have lived at Lower Farm since 1998.

I have been a member of Birlingham Parish Council for the last 12 months. I am a trustee and treasurer of The Friends of St James's Church Birlingham and Secretary of the Birlingham Sporting Gun Club.

Having run several technology businesses, I bring some practical skills that can be applied for the benefit of the local community. I hope to continue to serve the village through the Parish Council in the future.
